The ultimate remedy for anxiety, CBD oil

If you suffer from anxiety, you will be interested in the latest evidence that the main non-addictive, non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, cannabidiol or CBD, has considerable therapeutic potential to treat a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders. These include chronic pain, epilepsy, psychosis and anxiety. Specifically, CBD oil for anxiety helps to reverse anxiety-related disorders and improve overall quality of life after weeks of treatment.

The human body has many different receptors. These receptors are protein-based chemical structures that attach to cells and receive signals from different stimuli. Specifically, it is believed that anti-anxiety CBD oil works as if it were secreted by our own body and interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are primarily in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Exactly how cannabidiol affects these receptors in the brain has not yet been deciphered. However, it has been shown that it can alter serotonin signaling.

  • For generalized anxiety

An NIH study conducted in 2015 already showed that CBD reduces stress in animals such as rats, and that the study subjects registered fewer signs of anxiety in their behavior. Other physiological symptoms, such as increased heart rate, also improved.

  • For other forms of anxiety 

CBD may also benefit people with social anxiety disorder (SAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or insomnia. In 2011, the effects of CBD were investigated in people with SAD. The study determined that those who received cannabidiol instead of placebo reduced their anxiety levels.

Other recent studies have shown that CBD can help with PTSD symptoms, combating nightmares and negative memories.

Research and evidence: CBD oil and anxiety 

As we have been seeing, several studies have been carried out in recent years. The following is a summary of the most relevant evidence:

As early as 2011, a study simulated the exercise of public speaking in patients with social anxiety disorder. Pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance. In addition, it decreased fear, while the placebo group presented higher levels.

2. In 2015, the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) published preclinical and clinical evidence of CBD as an effective treatment for numerous types of pathologies: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder (PD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD). In the study conducted, CBD interacted with different receptors in the brain that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors.

3. Other research has shown that it may work by affecting serotonin levels in the brain and thus help treat anxiety and depression. 

4. Anxiety and insomnia are sometimes related. Therefore, there is joint research evaluating the effects of CBD treatment in adults with anxiety or sleep problems. In this study, after 2 months of CBD treatment, 78.1% to 79.2% of participants reported improvements in anxiety symptoms.

5. Recently in 2020, research conducted in New Zealand evaluated the effects of CBD in 397 adults. Participants received CBD for a variety of ailments, and 70% reported a good to excellent level of satisfaction after treatment. In fact, people who received CBD treatment for anxiety or depression experienced improvements in pain and in their ability to perform daily functions.

Articles and Surveys

Beyond the research conducted, we have at our disposal several articles and reports: the journal Neurotherapeutics published a report indicating the benefits that CBD has to treat these disorders thanks to its anxiolytic and panicolytic properties, which make CBD oil against anxiety an optimal treatment. 

Subsequently, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) published a report on the effectiveness of cannabidiol in the treatment of nausea, vomiting, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, and anxiety. And finally, the authors of a 2020 article reviewed eight studies on CBD and found evidence supporting its use as an effective monotherapy or adjunctive therapy to treat generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Although cannabidiol may be beneficial for anxiety-related disorders, more controlled clinical studies are needed. Therefore, NCBI conducted a survey of users to better understand usage patterns, doses and self-perceived effects. Nearly 400 participants responded to 20 questions and the conclusions were clear: users took CBD to manage anxiety, stress, sleep and other symptoms, often at low doses. And while more follow-up studies are needed, respondents reported that CBD was effective for stress, sleep problems and anxiety.

CBD dosage for anxiety

If you are interested in trying CBD oil for anxiety, be advised that more clinical trials are needed to provide definitive clinical guidance on dosing for anxiety. 

In a 2018 study, male subjects received a 300 mg dose of CBD orally before undergoing a simulated public speaking test. The researchers concluded that the dose, administered 90 minutes before the test, was sufficient to significantly reduce the speakers' anxiety.

However, the staggering method is recommended to reach the ideal dosage for each of us. From Upani we always recommend starting with low doses, approximately 3 drops. If with that amount you see that the CBD oil against anxiety fulfills its function, you will have found your minimum effective dose. Otherwise, you can progressively increase it week after week.
